This artwork is about a moment of change.
I imagined a landscape where the ice has begun to retreat and water is finding its way through the earth. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, life begins to awaken.
I used all batiks allowing the colours and patterns to suggest the direction of the composition. The turquoise and green areas became flowing water, while the softer lavender fragments reminded me of ice breaking apart.
I added small groups of beads to suggest ice crystals. I like the uncertainty they create. Are these crystals forming, or are they disappearing?
The stitching is deliberately restrained. Some stitches hold the fabric fragments in place, while others introduce tiny movements and textures that may only become visible when you look closely.
Nothing here is intended to represent a particular landscape. Rather, I wanted to capture the feeling of transformation, that quiet moment when winter begins to release its hold and something new is about to happen.
For me, this work is about beginnings, and about the extraordinary changes in nature that often take place almost unnoticed.
